LCL cargo shares a container with other consignments and is separated at destination before onward collection. Plan the destination agent, document handover, customs preparation and collection of your own packages. Vessel arrival, cargo availability and permission to collect are different milestones. Al-Rouby helps coordinate clearance and inland handover around the actual consolidation arrangement.
Who should you contact before the vessel arrives?
Ask the origin forwarder to identify the Egyptian destination agent, receiving facility and shipment contact. Confirm the references that agent needs to locate your consignment and how arrival notices will be sent. Identify whether the freight provider’s scope ends at a destination warehouse or includes final delivery. LCL cargo is consolidated at origin, then deconsolidated and moved on at destination; confirm the actual location and service scope with your booked provider.
Which shipment references and documents should match?
Connect the invoice, packing list and transport document by goods, quantities, package references and weights. Where house and master bills are used, ask the forwarder to explain their references and which documents the destination agent requires. Keep importer and consignee details consistent and resolve document corrections before arrival. Confirm applicable ACI preparation and document submission before departure rather than treating consolidation as an exception from shipment readiness.
Why does arrival not automatically mean cargo is ready?
The vessel’s arrival estimate does not tell you when the consolidation has been unpacked, your packages identified and the relevant facility ready for collection. Ask the destination agent for cargo availability separately from vessel arrival. Coordinate customs preparation and any examination around the actual handling arrangement. Confirm facility opening hours and the party providing status updates. Avoid booking a truck solely from the vessel schedule when the packages’ availability has not been confirmed.
What must be resolved before collection is authorised?
Check customs release, the forwarder or carrier’s document release requirements, outstanding agreed charges and the facility’s collection instructions. A delivery order and customs release serve different parts of the handover; ask who confirms each one for your shipment. Record the authorised collecting party and the reference used at the facility. Requirements vary by provider, so use its instructions rather than assuming one carrier’s portal process applies to every LCL shipment.
How should destination charges and storage be discussed?
Request the destination charge schedule, charging basis and payer before booking where possible. Separate customs service, handling, storage and inland transport so the quotation’s scope is clear. Ask when any storage clock starts, which calendar applies and what event ends the charge. Do not assume full-container demurrage terms describe LCL warehouse storage. If a delay develops, request the reason, the outstanding action and an updated collection plan rather than waiting for a general arrival notification.
What should the collection and receiving plan contain?
Match the vehicle and handling equipment to the unpacked packages, not a full-container movement. Confirm package count, measurements, gross weight, stacking restrictions and the warehouse loading arrangement. Agree the factory or buyer’s address, receiving hours and unloading responsibility. Record package condition and any discrepancy at handover through the appropriate facility process. Al-Rouby can discuss customs coordination and inland delivery scope once the destination agent, cargo references and availability are clear.
What have we seen in real files?
Wrong digit in the ACID. We often find an ACID with a wrong digit on the shipping documents. This is critical: in our files it has led to customs holds and penalties for the importer, and sometimes for the shipping agent. We have it corrected with the carrier before arrival. More cases from our files: common problems in Egypt-bound shipments.

Frequently asked questions
Confirm package availability and all release conditions first. Vessel arrival does not show that the consolidation has been unpacked, your packages identified or the facility ready for collection. Ask the destination agent for the actual availability status and receiving location. Coordinate customs preparation and a truck appointment around those facts rather than book collection from the vessel estimate alone.
No. The provider’s document-release instructions and customs clearance status serve different parts of the handover. Ask who confirms each for your consignment and whether other agreed charges or facility instructions remain outstanding. Keep the authorised collector and collection reference clear. Do not arrange physical pickup solely because one release stage is complete.
Do not assume that. Request the destination facility’s charging basis, start event, calendar and the event that stops storage charges. Distinguish LCL warehouse handling and storage from a full-container movement’s demurrage or detention terms. Confirm the payer and any quoted allowances before booking where possible, then ask for an updated collection plan if a delay develops.
Ask the origin forwarder to identify the Egyptian agent, receiving facility and operational contact. Share the provider’s shipment reference, transport-document details and your package schedule so the agent can locate the consignment. Confirm how arrival and availability notices will be sent. Identify whether the booked scope ends at a warehouse or includes final delivery before the cargo arrives.
Where both are used, ask the forwarder to explain which reference identifies your consignment and which documents the destination agent needs. Align consignee, cargo description, quantities, package references and weights with the commercial file. Resolve corrections through the responsible provider before arrival. Do not assume one bill reference or a carrier’s general instructions are sufficient for every consolidation.
The collecting party must be authorised under the destination provider’s and facility’s instructions, with customs and other release conditions confirmed. Ask which references, identification, appointments or documents the actual facility requires. Agree who supplies them to the transport team and who confirms readiness. A truck booking alone does not establish permission to collect the cargo.
Record the discrepancy through the facility’s appropriate handover process and notify the destination agent, receiving business and relevant transport contact promptly. Compare the packages with the packing and shipment records, retaining the available evidence. Ask how corrections or claims should be handled under the actual arrangement. Do not silently amend the commercial file or assume a universal claim deadline.
Plan the vehicle for the unpacked packages: count, dimensions, gross weight, stacking restrictions and loading arrangement. Confirm final address, receiving contact, hours and unloading equipment. Agree whether handling and unloading are included in the transport scope. Track pickup separately from customs release and factory receipt, and keep the handover record linked to the consignment.
